Chapter Twenty-Eight

Zinichi took me back toward the spawn quarters in silence, only stopping to speak when we were almost at the doors.

“You shouldn’t antagonize the seneschal,” she said.

I opened my mouth to deny the intention to antagonize Artimus but changed my mind at the look on her face.

Fear.

She was afraid. Of Artimus? For me?

I needed to dig a little on this one. “Why not?”

She chewed on her bottom lip, gaze dropping so her lashes shielded her hazel eyes.

“Zinichi, come on. If there’s something that could hurt me, then—"

“The seneschal isn’t who he seems,” she blurted.

“O-kay…”

She pressed her lips together for a moment, then continued. “There are stories of his demon. Of the incubus who shares his body.”

“Wait…hang on. I’m confused. Incubus who shares his body? I thought he was an incubus.”

She sighed. “Yes, yes, he is, but incubi and succubi are dual personalities that live in harmony. They are woven together, inseparable, but one is usually stronger than the other. In some cases, the part that must feed on sexual energy is stronger and must be wrangled and subdued. In others, that part is weaker and easily satisfied. The seneschal has great hunger.” Her eyes grew wide. “There are stories of the seneschal being locked away as a youth. No one saw him for years, but the keep staff say they would hear his roars of rage. They say they felt his hunger. Then one day he was back by Satan’s side. Composed and controlled and that was that. No one explained his absence and it was never spoken of again.”

Hmmm, okay, interesting. “You’re saying he could snap.”

She eyed me, her gaze speculative, as if she was turning over the idea of speaking her thoughts.

Bit late for that now. She’d pretty much spilled the beans. “Just spit it out, Zinichi.”

“I believe the seneschal is in control of his hunger. Has been for the longest time, but every creature has its Achilles’ heel. And I fear that you, my sweet girl, might be his.”
